Overview
Abu Rafi' al-Fadl b. Abi 'Umar Ahmad b. Hazm — son of Abu 'Umar, father of the Zahiri jurist Ibn Hazm; an eminent, self-possessed, virtuous man in the service of al-Mu'tamid b. 'Abbad, lord of Seville. 1
The uncle's answer
Al-Mu'tamid grew angry with his uncle Abu Talib 'Abd al-Jabbar and resolved to kill him, summoned his viziers and asked: "who knows of the caliphs or party-kings one who killed his uncle when the uncle rose against him?" Abu Rafi' came forward: "we know none, may God aid you, but one who pardoned his uncle after the uncle rose — Ibrahim b. al-Mahdi, al-Ma'mun's uncle." Al-Mu'tamid accepted his word, thanked him, brought his uncle, spread him and did him good. Abu Rafi' was killed at the battle of al-Zallaqa beside his master al-Mu'tamid. 1
