Life in time
Abu Faris ʿAbd al-ʿAziz al-Hafsi
Sultan Abu Faris ʿAbd al-ʿAziz al-Hafsi, ruler of Tunis. Ibn ʿAbd al-Haqq al-Sabti reports that he slept little at night and had no concern beyond looking after the affairs of his realm. He would give the call to prayer himself, lead people in congregational prayer, remember God often, and draw people of goodness close to him. He abolished many of the abuses in Tunis, among them a hall where wine had been permitted to the Franks. Throughout his lands there were no tolls, but he insisted on collecting zakat and the tithe. He kept the roads in good repair, so that caravans were safe in his days throughout his lands. He sent alms to Cairo and the Two Holy Sanctuaries, did not wear silk, did not wear a gold ring, and greeted people 1.
He died while on his way to Tlemcen in 837 AH 1.
