Summary

Malik said: the best that has been heard in interpreting the verse of al-Baqara about the free for the free, the slave for the slave, and the female for the female: retaliation applies between females as it applies between males; a free woman is killed for a free woman as a free man is killed for a free man, and a slave-woman is killed for a slave-woman as a slave is killed for a slave. Retaliation also applies between men and women, because God reasoned in the verse of al-Ma'ida that the soul is for the soul; so the soul of a free woman is for the soul of a free man, and her wound for his wound. 1
