Summary
Malik said regarding the blood-money of clients: the kin are obliged to bear it if they wish; if they refuse, they are people of the register or assigned stipends. People shared the kin's liability in the time of the Messenger, and in the time of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may God be pleased with him) before there was a register; the register existed only in the time of Umar ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him), so no one may bear blood-money for a client except his own people and his clients, because clientage does not pass, and the Prophet ﷺ said: clientage belongs to the one who frees. Malik said: clientage is an established kinship. 1
