Summary
Malik said: the practice among us regarding a man who contracts his slave and then settles with him for gold, remitting part of what the slave owes under the contract on condition that he pays the settlement at once, is that there is no harm in it. A settlement is not like a deferred debt that is remitted and then paid. It is property that the contract slave gives his master so that he may hasten his manumission, by which inheritance, testimony and prescribed punishments become due to him, and the sanctity of manumission is established for him. 1
