Summary

A report of Sahl ibn Sa'd in the virtues of Ali: a man from the family of Marwan who governed Medina ordered Sahl to curse Ali, and he refused. He then related that "Abu Turab" was the name of Ali that he loved most, which the Prophet ﷺ called him when he found him wiping dust from his back in the mosque after a dispute with Fatima. 1

Abu Sufyan's mission to Medina

Frightened by what had been done at al-Watir, Quraysh sent Abu Sufyan ibn Harb to Medina to stiffen the pact and extend its term. The Prophet gave him no answer; Abu Bakr and Umar declined to intercede; Ali advised him to grant protection himself, which he did and returned home empty-handed.
