Overview

The Dajaima, the sons of Dajam ibn Sulayh ibn Hulwan of Qudaa: branches that reached the edges of Syria in the period when the Arabs were in turmoil through the migrations of the tribes. The Romans took them into their service, to keep the Arabs of the desert from mischief and to be a force against the Persians, and they appointed one of them as king. 1 2 3

Their kings and their period

Kingship passed among them over the years. Among their best-known kings was Ziyad ibn al-Habula. Their period is estimated roughly from the early second century CE to its end. 1

The end

Their rule ended after the arrival of the Ghassanids, who overcame the Dajaima in what they held and defeated them, and the Romans then appointed the Ghassanids as kings over the Arabs of Syria. 1 See the Ghassanid kingdom.

For young visitors

The Dajaima were the first Arab kings whom the Romans appointed in Syria. The Ghassanids later defeated them and took their place.

A great tribe of Himyarite affiliation (debated); it left Yemen for the Samawa steppe on Iraq’s edge, moved on to al-Sham under Ardashir’s pressure, and produced the Salihids — the Dajaʾima — Rome’s first Arab client kings.
