Overview

Banu al-Najjar is a branch of al-Khazraj in Yathrib. In the account of The Sealed Nectar they were the maternal uncles of Abd al-Muttalib: Hashim married Salma bint Amr of Banu Adi ibn al-Najjar, and Abd al-Muttalib grew up in her father's house. 1 2

Their support for Abd al-Muttalib

When Nawfal seized Abd al-Muttalib's water-skins and none of the men of Quraysh supported him, he wrote verses to his maternal uncles of Banu al-Najjar asking for help. His uncle Abu Sad ibn Adi set out with eighty riders and camped in al-Abtah in Mecca, and drew his sword on Nawfal until the water-skins were returned. 3 4

When Khuza'a saw Banu al-Najjar support Abd al-Muttalib, they said: "We gave birth to him as you did, so we have a better claim to support him", because the mother of Abd Manaf was from them. They then allied themselves with Banu Hashim. 3 See the recovery of Abd al-Muttalib's water-skins.
