Summary

In the year 294 AH Zikrawayh al-Qarmati, whose power had grown to the point that he cut the pilgrim road twice, marched to Fayd and corresponded with its people, but gained nothing from them. He withdrew to al-Nabbaj and then to Hafr Abi Musa. Al-Muktafi dispatched Wasif ibn Sawartakin with a group of commanders; they passed from al-Qadisiya by the road of Khafan.

Wasif met him on Saturday, with eight days left in Rabiʿ I. They fought all day and inflicted a great slaughter on them, and they reached Zikrawayh, who was struck with a sword in a blow that reached his brain. A group of his family and companions were captured. He lived five days and then died. His belly was cut open, and he and the captives were brought forward and put to death. With that, the gravest Qarmatian disturbances against Iraq in that decade subsided.

The Two Attacks on Pilgrim Caravans at al-'Aqaba and al-Talih

In 294 the Qarmatians fell on the pilgrim caravan at al-'Aqaba on the Mecca road — killed, enslaved women, took a million dinars' worth; the caliph sent al-Hasan ibn Dawud al-Hashimi to Kufa to dispatch armies. Then at al-Talih in the Shaquq they fought the next caravan for three days until the pilgrims, waterless, collapsed and surrendered; the sword was put to them and the whole caravan seized.
