Summary
In the year 294 the Qarmatians, led by Zikrawayh, intercepted the pilgrim caravan on the road to Mecca at al-Aqaba. They killed those they chose to kill, took as many women captive as they wished, and seized the whole caravan, taking goods worth a million dinars. The authorities sent Abu Abd Allah al-Hasan ibn Dawud al-Hashimi, the secretary, to Kufa to dispatch armies from there against the Qarmatian.
The Qarmatian then moved to al-Shuquq and stopped at a place called al-Tulayh, waiting for the second caravan. When it reached him, the caravan's people fought him from morning until night, and resumed the fighting on the third day. Severe thirst overcame them, as they had no water; they fell into disarray and surrendered, and the sword was turned upon them, though only a few were killed by his hand. All that was in the caravan was taken. The cutting of the pilgrims' road had a deep effect on weakening the state's prestige in the heart of Iraq.
