Summary

Talha ibn al-Mutamid (al-Muwaffaq, as the source names him) returned from the Zanj war in the year 259 AH, worn down by illness. Al-Muʿtamid ʿala Allah ordered Musa ibn Bugha to set out from Samarra for the Zanj war in Dhu al-Qaʿda. The caliph saw him off and bestowed robes on him on the road. There were wars between him and the Zanj over about a dozen months, the account of which is long, and then he was relieved of the war. 1.

The Zanj entered Ahwaz in this year and killed about fifty thousand people. It is among the fiercest engagements Ibn al-Jawzi records in the Zanj advance outside their stronghold in Basra. 1.

The sack of al-Ahwaz, 421

Jalal al-Dawla entered al-Ahwaz and let his troops loose in it for sixteen days. His letter reached Baghdad on 11 Rabi' II 421 describing what had been taken: the letter claimed that the booty exceeded five million dinars and that two thousand slave-girls were taken captive, along with what the victorious king's own account gives of himself and of their number.
