Overview

In 253 AH the caliph al-Mu'tazz billah sent his freedman Musa ibn Bugha al-Kabir against the Talibiyyun who had appeared among the Daylam and the region of Tabaristan. 1

The campaign

The Daylam had gathered round a man of theirs known as al-Kawki. Musa ibn Bugha raided the Daylam and went deep into their land; they fought him and he defeated them. The source says that his weight fell heavily on them and his hard blows were strong. 1

The date comes from the source's phrase "and this was the year 253". The data gives no detail of the outcome of the campaign afterwards, and this needs an additional source.

Qumm's Revolt and Re-Conquest

In al-Baladhuri: when Qumm's people defied, withheld kharaj and rebelled, al-Ma'mun sent Ali ibn Hisham al-Marwazi with armies ordered to punish them — he killed their chief Yahya ibn Imran, demolished the city wall flat to the ground, and levied seven million dirhams plus increments, though they had earlier appealed against two million; this fell due in al-Mu'tazz's caliphate, when Musa ibn Bugha, his Jibal agent fighting the Tabaristan Talibis, was sent against them — the city was stormed, many of its people killed, and al-Mu'tazz ordered a group of its notables deported.
