Overview
On Saturday the twenty-eighth of Ramadan 627 AH Jalal al-Din ibn Khwarazm Shah was defeated by Ala al-Din Kaykubad, lord of the lands of Rum, and al-Malik al-Ashraf, lord of Damascus and the lands of al-Jazira and Khilat. The battle took place at a place Ibn al-Athir calls Basi Himar, in the districts of Arzanjan. 1
The cause
Ibn al-Athir relates that the lord of Arzan of the Rum obeyed Jalal al-Din and helped him in the siege of Khilat. Ala al-Din feared him, and sent messengers to al-Malik al-Kamil and his brother al-Ashraf, urging al-Ashraf to meet him. 1
The meeting
Al-Ashraf gathered the armies of al-Jazira and Syria, met Ala al-Din at Sivas, and they marched toward Khilat, and Jalal al-Din marched against them. With Ala al-Din were about twenty thousand horsemen, and with al-Ashraf about five thousand, led by Izz al-Din Umar ibn Ali of the Kurdish Hakkariyya. 1
The defeat
Ibn al-Athir says that Jalal al-Din was stunned by the number of the armies, especially the Syrian army. Izz al-Din opened the fighting with the army of Aleppo, and Jalal al-Din fled defeated and his army was scattered; he returned to Khilat and then to Khoy in Azerbaijan. The lord of Arzan of the Rum was taken captive, and people made a proverb of it. 1
The Gregorian date of the day in the museum is derived from the Hijri date.
