كارثة واقصة وقطع خفاجة على الحاج

c. September 1012 CE · Safar 403 AH

In Safar of the year 403 Abu Fulayta ibn al-Qawi of the Banu Khafaja forestalled the pilgrims at Waqisa with six hundred men. They drained the water in the reservoirs of al-Barmaki and al-Rayyan, silted them up, and threw colocynth into the wells. When the pilgrims reached the Aqaba he held them back, barred their passage and demanded fifty thousand dinars. When thirst reached them he attacked, seized their loads and money, and about fifteen thousand people perished; the amir of the pilgrims, Abu al-Harith al-Alawi, escaped on foot. He then wrote to Fakhr al-Mulk Ali ibn Mazyad al-Asadi, who fell on the Khafaja in the desert near Basra, killed some of them, captured Abu Fulayta and fourteen men, and recovered what he could. 1

Summary

In Safar 403 AH the Banu Khafaja intercepted the Iraqi pilgrim caravan at Waqisa and dried up the wells, and thousands of pilgrims died of thirst in one of the harshest disasters on the pilgrimage road. 1

Treachery and thirst

Abu Fulayta ibn al-Qawi, with six hundred men of Banu Khafaja, got ahead of the pilgrims to Waqisa. They drained the water from the cisterns of al-Barmaki and al-Rayyan and threw colocynth into the wells to render them useless. When the pilgrims reached al-ʿAqaba, he besieged them and demanded fifty thousand dinars. As their thirst grew severe, he attacked and seized the money and the loads. It was said that about fifteen thousand people died, and their amir, Abu al-Harith al-ʿAlawi, escaped on foot with a small group. 1

Ibn Mazyad's pursuit

The vizier Fakhr al-Mulk wrote to the amir ʿAli ibn Mazyad al-Asadi ordering him to go out in pursuit. He caught up with them in the desert near Basra, struck them, captured Abu Fulayta and fourteen men from the notables of Khafaja, recovered as much of the money as he could, and brought the captives to Baghdad. 2

The 'Adudi Bimaristan of Baghdad, the hospital 'Adud al-Dawla built: opened at the start of Rabi' II 372 with everything spent that could perfect it — physicians gathered in it, medicines, wardens, servants, vessels and clothes, all that the sick need — and the poor were given the clothes and vessels that came out of it.
