The Prophet's she-camel strays and Zayd ibn al-Lusayt's remark

The Prophet's she-camel strayed on some part of the road and his companions went out searching for her. With him was Ummara ibn Hazm; in his howdah rode Zayd ibn al-Lusayt al-Qaynuqa'i — a hypocrite, per Ibn Ishaq — who mocked: how does Muhammad tell you of heaven when he does not know where his camel is? The Prophet announced his words and the camel's whereabouts and they found it as described — so Ummara drove Zayd from his howdah. ¹

The Prophet's she-camel strayed on the road and his companions went out after her; with him was a companion called Ummara ibn Hazm — an Uqbi of Badr, the paternal uncle of Banu Amr ibn Hazm (may God be pleased with him). ²

In Ummara's howdah rode Zayd ibn al-Lusayt al-Qaynuqa'i — a hypocrite, per Ibn Ishaq. ²

Zayd said, Ummara at the Prophet ﷺ's side: does not Muhammad claim to be a prophet telling you the tidings of heaven — yet he knows not where his camel is? ²

The Prophet said — Ummara before him — that a man had said such and such; "by God, I know only what God has taught me, and God has guided me to her: she is in this valley, in such-and-such a ravine, a tree having caught her by her halter — go and bring her to me." They went and brought her. ¹

Ummara returned to his howdah and told what the Prophet had said; a man in the howdah who had not been present said: by God, Zayd said those very words before you arrived. Ummara turned on Zayd, striking his neck and saying: out of my howdah, enemy of God — do not ride with me. ³

Ibn Ishaq said: some allege Zayd repented after that; some say he remained stained with evil until he perished. ³

• Ibn Hisham said: "it is also said ibn Lusayb (with a ba')" — on the name Zayd ibn al-Lusayt (p. 166).
• Disagreement on Zayd's end: "some allege Zayd repented after that; some say he remained stained with evil until he perished" (p. 167).
• Describing Zayd as a hypocrite and calling him "enemy of God" is the narrator's (Ummara's) speech; the museum does not claim it.
