Summary

In 634 AH the Tatars camped before Arbil, besieged it and took it by the sword, until the city overflowed with the dead. Then they marched away with countless spoils 1.

Arbil had been the seat of the Begtekin dynasty since the days of Muzaffar al-Din Kukburi. After Kukburi's death in 630 AH, its ruler had entered the obedience of the caliph al-Mustansir bi-Llah. Its fall by the sword was therefore a shock throughout al-Jazira, and a sign that the Tatar ring had reached the upper cities of Iraq and not merely their outskirts 1.

The Tatars Return to Rayy and Hamadan in 621 AH

In 621 the Tatars returned from the Qipchaq lands to Rayy; the survivors who had drifted back found the Tatars upon them — killing and enslaving — then Qum and Kashan were sacked, Hamadan massacred, and at Tabriz they fought a set battle with the Khwarazmians.
