c. 1214 CE · c. 611 AH

A camel-hirer turned Khwarazmshah's most trusted amir, Taj al-Din Abu Bakr of Zuzan took Kirman 'in the quickest time', swept Makran to Sind's borders by Kabul, and received Hormuz's tribute — the great entrepôt whose protection merchants from India, China and Yemen bought with obedience — raising the Khwarazmian khutba at Qalhat and parts of Oman; Ibn al-Athir heard the story from a Mosul soldier who marched in the conquest 1.

Overview

Ibn al-Athir relates that the amir Taj al-Din Abu Bakr, lord of Zuzan, who at the beginning was a camel-driver hiring out camels on journeys, became one of the notable amirs and trusted men of Muhammad ibn Tekish, Khwarazm Shah. 2

The conquests

He took Kirman from its lord Harb ibn Muhammad ibn Abi al-Fadl in the shortest time. Then he marched to the parts of Makran and took all of it, to the Sind from the borders of Kabul. He came to Hormuz on the coast of the sea of Makran, and its lord Maltak obeyed him and sent money. The Khwarazm Shah was given the khutba in Qalhat and some of Oman, because its people obeyed the lord of Hormuz. 2

Hormuz

Ibn al-Athir describes Hormuz as the great harbour where merchants gathered from the far reaches of India, China and Yemen. 2

Date

The event was reported to Ibn al-Athir by one of the soldiers of Mosul who had accompanied the conquest, and he was unsure of its year. It is in 611 AH or a little before or after it. 2

Perishing of the Khwarazmshah on an island in the Caspian Sea

Genghis marched; Khwarazmshah fled the Jayhun to Nishapur, then Hamadan's field, where the enemy ringed him, killed his company, and he alone swam to an island — pleurisy took him, alone, shrouded in a farrash's cloth, in 617; his whole realm fell. Ibn al-Athir: 'the Tatar calamity — had one said the world since creation was never tried its like, he would speak true'.
