Overview

After his deposition, al-Rashid went to Azerbaijan, and caused corruption in Maragha, Hamadhan and Isfahan. Then he fell seriously ill outside Isfahan. 1

His killing

A group of non-Arabs who had been his attendants came in to him and killed him with knives on 16 Ramadan 532 AH, and then all of them were killed. The mantle and the staff were not taken from him until he was killed, and they were brought afterwards to al-Muqtafi. 1

Al-Suyuti quotes the writer Imad, who said of him: "al-Rashid had the generosity of al-Hasan al-Yusufi and the liberality of Hatim." 1

In 530 conflict broke out between Sultan Mas'ud and caliph al-Rashid bi'llah; armies were mustered, the caliph left for Mosul, and Mas'ud entered Baghdad, seized the palace, and produced al-Mustarshid's letter — whoever leaves Baghdad to fight the Sultan has deposed himself — so the jurists who were asked ruled for deposition, and he was deposed on Monday 16 Dhu al-Qa'da by the hakim's ruling and the fuqaha's fatwa, while his uncle al-Muqtafi was summoned and given the caliphate's bay'a.
