Summary
Rukn al-Din Baybars al-Bunduqdari was eager to take Aleppo, which al-Malik al-Muzaffar Qutuz had promised him, but Qutuz then went back on it. Baybars was affected by this, and he nursed his grievance, and this was the beginning of estrangement between them. When al-Muzaffar returned to Egypt a month later, concealing ill will toward him, several amirs agreed with Rukn al-Din on his aim. The one who struck him with a sword and cut through his shoulder was Kutut al-Jukandar al-Maghribi. Then Bahadur al-Maghribi shot him with an arrow that finished him off. This took place on the sixteenth of Dhu al-Qaʿda 658 AH, near Qaṭiya. Rukn al-Din al-Bunduqdari then took the sultanate as al-Malik al-Zahir Baybars 2.
