Summary
On the night of Friday, the first night of Ramadan 654 AH, the Prophet's Mosque burned after the taraweeh prayer, as Ibn al-Imad relates in Shadharat al-Dhahab. 1
How the fire began
The source reports that the attendant Abu Bakr al-Maraghi dropped a wick from his hand, and the fire consumed all the roofs. Some of the pillars fell and the lead melted. This happened before people had gone to sleep. 1
The chamber
The roof of the chamber burned, and part of it fell inside. 1
What was said about it
Ibn al-Imad quotes verses that some people composed about the event, and two verses by Ibn Tulu al-Maghribi, in which the poets blame the Rafidis for the fire. This is the view of the poets alone, and the source gives no evidence for it. The first account attributes the fire to the falling wick. 1
