Overview
After the sultan al-Nasir Faraj went out to fight Shaykh and was defeated and killed, the caliph al-Musta'in was given the sultanate in addition to the caliphate in Muharram 815 AH. 2
During his sultanate
He accepted this only after the amirs had bound themselves with oaths. He returned to Egypt with the amirs in his service, disposed of appointments and dismissals, and coins were struck in his name. Ibn Hajar composed his famous poem in his praise. 2
Shaykh takes power
The stable master Shaykh took up residence and was given charge of the kingdom, and was titled Nizam al-Mulk. Then he prevailed over the sultanate and took the title al-Mu'ayyad, announced the deposition of al-Musta'in, and gave the caliphate to his brother Dawud, who took the title al-Mu'tadid. 2
When this reached Nawruz, the governor of Syria, he gathered the judges and scholars, who ruled that it was not lawful, and he decided to fight al-Mu'ayyad. 2
This agrees with the "Shadharat al-Dhahab", which says that a Shaykh took the sultanate in 815 and was given the title al-Mu'ayyad. 3
