Overview
Al-Ma'mun appointed Mazyar ibn Qarin over the affairs of Tabaristan, and al-Mu'tasim confirmed him. He then rebelled more than six years into al-Mu'tasim's caliphate, and was taken to Samarra in 225 AH. 1
The war
Al-Mu'tasim wrote to Abd Allah ibn Tahir to fight him, and he sent his paternal uncle al-Hasan ibn al-Husayn. Mazyar's brother Quhyar was in correspondence with al-Hasan and Muhammad ibn Ibrahim. By a stratagem of an ambush, Mazyar was taken without a pledge. 1
The end
He was taken to Samarra and beaten with whips before al-Mu'tasim until he died, and he was crucified together with Babak al-Khurrami. Some of his brother Quhyar's close men were killed in Tabaristan. Tabaristan was conquered and taken over by Abd Allah ibn Tahir. 1
Al-Mas'udi's account
Al-Mas'udi says that al-Ma'mun raised him, and he rebelled in the days of al-Mu'tasim, and al-Hasan ibn al-Husayn captured him and brought him to Samarra. 2
