The first deposition of al-Muqtadir and the allegiance to Ibn al-Mu'tazz

خلع المقتدر الأول وبيعة ابن المعتز

c. 909 CE · 296 AH

On 20 Rabi' I 296, while al-Muqtadir played polo, the conspirators struck: the vizier al-Abbas ibn al-Hasan was killed and Ibn al-Mu'tazz was brought in, hailed caliph as 'al-Ghalib bi'llah', with Muhammad ibn Dawud ibn al-Jarrah as vizier and Abu al-Muthanna as qadi. The next day terror fell on them — they scattered without a fight; Ibn al-Mu'tazz fled, was imprisoned, then brought out dead 1.

Overview

In Rabi al-Awwal 296 AH al-Muqtadir was deposed and Ibn al-Mu'tazz was given the oath of the caliphate for a single day. 1

Al-Suyuti's account

Al-Suyuti relates that the deposers rode out on the twentieth of Rabi al-Awwal while al-Muqtadir was playing polo; he fled and the gates were shut. The vizier al-Abbas ibn al-Hasan and a group were killed. The commanders, judges and notables gave the oath to Ibn al-Mu'tazz, titled al-Ghalib bi-llah, and he appointed Muhammad ibn Dawud ibn al-Jarrah as vizier. 1

Then God cast terror into their hearts, as al-Suyuti puts it, and they dispersed without fighting. Ibn al-Mu'tazz fled, was imprisoned, and was then brought out dead. Those jurists and amirs who had deposed him were killed, except four. 1

Ibn al-Athir's account

According to Ibn al-Athir, Ibn al-Mu'tazz was titled al-Murtada bi-llah, not al-Ghalib. He took charge of killing the vizier al-Husayn ibn Hamdan, Badr al-Mu'tadidi and Wasif on the way to his garden. Then al-Husayn rode to al-Shaṭiba to kill al-Muqtadir but did not find him. Ibn al-Mu'tazz's men fled when Munis al-Khadim and those with him came by water. 2
