Summary
Rayy was taken through the cunning of al-Zaynabi, Abu al-Furqan. Its ruler, Siyawakhsh ibn Mihran, broke ranks and met Nu'aym ibn Muqarrin seeking terms, and said to him: "The people are many and you are few. Send horsemen with me, and I will lead them into their city by an entrance they will not notice, while you attack them." Nu'aym sent the horsemen of his nephew al-Mundhir ibn Amr (may God be pleased with him) in at night without the people noticing. Nu'aym then fell upon them, keeping them occupied away from their city, until they heard the takbir behind them; they fled and were slaughtered in a massacre so great it was tallied with reed stalks. God granted the Muslims spoils at Rayy in an amount similar to what there was at al-Mada'in. Nu'aym ruined the old city and ordered al-Zaynabi to build the new Rayy, and the honour of Rayy remained with its people. 1
