The Conquest of Hulwan and Qarmasin

فتح حلوان وقرماسين

Hulwan

In al-Baladhuri: when the Muslims finished the affair of Jalula's battle, Hashim ibn Utba joined heavy horse to Jarir ibn Abdallah al-Bajali, stationed at Jalula as a screen between the Muslims and their enemy; Sa'd then sent some three thousand, ordering him to rise with them and his men for Hulwan. As he neared it Yazdgard fled toward Isbahan; Jarir took Hulwan by treaty — staying his hand, securing their blood and wealth, and letting whoever wished flee go unmolested. He left Uzra ibn Qays ibn Ghaziyya al-Bajali at Hulwan, marched on al-Dinawar which he did not take, and conquered Qarmasin on Hulwan's terms; he then stayed governing at Hulwan until Ammar ibn Yasir (may God be pleased with him) came to Kufa — Umar having ordered him to reinforce Abu Musa al-Ash'ari — leaving Uzra over Hulwan and marching to Abu Musa in year 19; a group of Jarir's descendants settled Hulwan, whose posterity remain there.

Overview

al-Baladhuri relates that after the battle of Jalula, Hashim ibn Utba added dense horsemen to Jarir ibn Abd Allah al-Bajali to stand between the Muslims and their enemy. Then Sa'd ordered him to advance on Hulwan with about three thousand men. 1

The conquest

When Jarir came near, Yazdegerd fled toward Isfahan. Jarir took Hulwan by treaty, and granted its people safety for their lives and property, and that whoever wished to flee should not be molested. 1

After the conquest

Jarir left Uzra ibn Qays al-Bajali at Hulwan and went toward Dinawar, but did not conquer it. He took Qarmasin on terms like those of Hulwan. Then, on Umar's order, he marched to Abu Musa al-Ash'ari in 19 AH, as al-Baladhuri relates. 1

Dhu al-Khalasa (the 'Ka'ba of Yemen')

A pagan sanctuary venerated by Khath'am, Bajila and the neighbouring tribes of Tihama, who made pilgrimage to it; it was called the 'Ka'ba of Yemen' or the 'Ka'ba of the north' in contrast to the house of Mecca. In the Sahih the Prophet asked Jarir ibn 'Abdallah al-Bajali 'will you not relieve me of Dhu al-Khalasa?' — he rode out with a hundred and fifty horsemen of Ahmas, broke it and killed those he found there, and the Prophet prayed for them and for Ahmas.
