al-Mubarak Canal and the Tigris Pontoon

al-Baladhuri reports that Khalid ibn Abd Allah al-Qasri dug the canal of al-Mubarak, and then wished to build a bridge over the Tigris. ¹

al-Farazdaq praised the canal in his poetry, saying that al-Mubarak was like its name, and that with it he watered the land of al-Sawad. The account quotes his verses. ¹

Khalid wrote to Hisham ibn Abd al-Malik asking permission to build a bridge over the Tigris. Hisham wrote that if it were possible, the Persians would have done it first. Khalid pressed the request, and Hisham wrote that if he was certain it would be completed, he should build it. ¹

Khalid built it and spent heavily on it, but before long the water cut it. Hisham made him repay what he had spent on it. ¹
