Summary
Sha'rawi holds that the Quran did not come to teach the secrets of the cosmos. The Prophet, in his view, confined himself to what was known of them and left the rest to later generations, so that minds would not turn from the duties of worship to disputes that reach no conclusion. He holds that the Quran's cosmic references are understood as knowledge advances. 1 2
Leaving detail and the Quran's gifts
Sha'rawi says that the Prophet ﷺ's leaving the cosmic detail open kept the Quran's gift renewed: each time God reveals a new secret to people, a new side of its inimitability appears. He calls this "restraint is itself a gift." 3
An example
Sha'rawi's example of the spread earth in Surat Qaf is set out in The Quran's inimitability renewed in every age, as his own view.
Author's view
This is Sha'rawi's view and his reasoning, attributed to him here. The views of other scholars on the cosmic references are not yet presented and will be added from other sources in a later batch.
