Development of law, theology and institutions
Summary
Ittihad is two things becoming one; the ruling (hukm) is God's address concerning the acts of responsible persons, by demand, by choice or by stipulation. 1 The usulis treat unity of the ruling in two places: when a word is unrestricted in one text and restricted in another, and when one ruling has several causes. 1
Several causes for one ruling
The majority allow one ruling to have two or more causes, since legal causes are signs and nothing prevents several signs from pointing at one thing; they hold that this occurs, as touching, bodily contact and urination each prevent prayer. 1 Ibn Furak and al-Razi allowed it for causes stated in the text but not for derived ones; the author of Jam' al-Jawami' held that it is rationally impossible. 1
Where it is discussed
The fuller treatment is in the usul appendix; unity of the cause (ittihad al-sabab) is treated under its own heading. 1
