Overview

The most beautiful names of God (asma' Allah al-husna) are the names of perfection and majesty by which God named Himself; the famous hadith reports: "God has ninety-nine names — a hundred less one — whoever enumerates them enters Paradise" 1 2.

In the scholars' books

Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya devoted a section of Jala' al-Afham to the ninety-nine names, transmitting and commenting on them 3; later writers expanded the subject into chapters on creed, remembrance and supplication, making it among the most-repeated topics in Islamic writing.

From Sheikh Omar Abdelkafy's Tafsir lectures (episode 3)

The Sheikh says that God is the Guide before there exists anyone who needs guidance, that is, from eternity, and that He is the First, the Last, the Manifest and the Hidden 4. He adds that God is the Provider before there exists anyone who needs provision 4.

The Sheikh says these are among the most beautiful names of God, and when they settle in the servant's heart he gains full certainty in the sincerity of his reliance on God 5. He explains that God's guidance exists before the existence of those who need it, and that His provision exists before the servants are created 5.

The Sheikh stresses again that God is the Provider before He creates those who need provision 6. He then turns to the softening of hearts, likening it to a gradual process of making something supple, prays that God soften the hearts of those present, and links this to opening the Qur'an and reading it 6.

Hilal (the crescent and the lunar month for the law)

Hilal in the lexical sense is the moon in a particular state; technically it is the first sighting of the lit part of the moon on the first night. The law made the crescents times for people: the deferred dealings and the rites (the pilgrimage, fasting, the breaking of the fast) and the matters with legal effects, such as the waiting period, the period of nursing and the period of the oath of abstention. Jurists hold that only the lawgiver fixes the times of worship, while the times of transactions are agreed by the parties; an unqualified month is taken as a lunar month. The size of the crescent is no guide to the start of the month; what counts is the night of sighting.
