Summary

Sha'rawi holds that companionship means affection and constant attachment: the Fire clings to those who disbelieve and rejoices in them as a friend rejoices in a friend, and Paradise clings to the righteous believers and delights them 1 2. See Qaf 30 and Hud 23.

Companionship of the Fire

He reads the verse that describes the Fire being asked whether it is full as showing that it is never satisfied, and holds that this companionship pleases the Fire, which punishes those who disbelieved in God's method 1. This is his explanation of one aspect of the verse, not its wording.

Companionship of Paradise

He holds that Paradise is joined to believers and loves them as the Fire is joined to disbelievers, and that Paradise is glad to delight the believer 2. See Hud 23.

Eternity and no lightening

He holds that the punishment in the Fire is everlasting, unchanging, unabated and not lightened, and cites the verse on those who traded the worldly life for the Hereafter 2. See al-Baqara 86.

Opinions on the question

The question: Is the eternal punishment of disbelievers unchanging, and how is the companionship between the Fire and the disbeliever to be understood?

First opinion · Sunni tradition (the museum's frame)Main reference

The Fire is joined to disbelievers in an everlasting dwelling that is not lightened for them; Paradise is joined to believers

Sha'rawi describes companionship as love and constancy, holds that the punishment in the Fire is everlasting and not lightened, and cites the verse that denies any lightening for those who traded the worldly life for the Hereafter {cite:tafsir-sharawi-khawatir-scan p.283} {cite:tafsir-sharawi-khawatir-scan p.284}.

Islamic eschatology

Islamic eschatology is the part of the creed concerned with death, the signs of the Hour, resurrection, reckoning and recompense; the Tahawiyya and its Sharh devote a chapter to belief in the signs of the Hour, noting that scholars devoted whole works to its hadiths.
