Summary

Al-Qur'an Adventure is an interactive Indonesian Qur'an from the publisher alQosbah, combining the Qur'anic text and the official Indonesian translation with visual and digital media; the reviewer calls it a "one-stop Qur'an" for the range of aids it offers. 1

Publisher and context

AlQosbah was founded in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, by a group of entrepreneurs, publishes only Qur'ans, has distributed over ten million copies in Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei, and in 2022 received the Innovative Quran Publisher Award from the Ministry of Religious Affairs' Lajnah Pentashihan Mushaf. 1 The reviewer notes estimates of annual demand for printed Qur'ans in Indonesia of about 37 million copies against production of about seven million. 1

What it contains

It uses the official Ministry translation with thematic subheadings, and beneath the text a word-for-word translation based on the linguistic exegesis of Ibn Kathir's tafsir. 1 Every page carries a QR code opening animated stories and videos; there are 31 stories and 76 lessons supported by hadith, colour-coded tajwid, and marks to help pausing, breathing and memorisation. 1 Yulia Riswan observes that its translations are still not fully child-friendly, as they put accuracy of meaning first. 1

Today

The publisher now issues translations in other languages and took part in the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2023 and 2024. 1

De Koran: uitleg voor kinderen (Abdul Wahid van Bommel)

The first interpretation of the Qur'an for children in Dutch, by Abdul Wahid van Bommel, an imam and professor at the Islamic University of Rotterdam, in a series of volumes, the first in 2017, the second in 2020 and the third in 2024, each centred on one of the five resolute prophets; he translates the selected verses himself and explains them in a 'philosophising with children' style for ages ten to fourteen, with illustrations by the Bosnian artist Senad Alić.
