Summary

Muzil al-Khafa' an Alfaz al-Shifa' ("Removing the Obscurity from the Words of al-Shifa") is a gloss by Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Shumunni on Qadi Iyad's al-Shifa, printed at the foot of its pages in the Dar al-Kutub al-Ilmiyya edition. 1

Why it was written

In its opening al-Shumunni says that while teaching al-Shifa he was enabled to explain some of its words, open its closed passages and solve its difficulties, so he gathered this for the benefit of students and readers and called it Muzil al-Khafa'. 2 His biographer says he abridged it from Burhan al-Halabi's commentary and added small supplements containing precise findings. 3

Method

The gloss follows the text phrase by phrase ("his words…"), fixes the reading of each word by vowels and letters, explains rare terms from al-Sihah, Ibn al-Athir's al-Nihaya and others, and identifies persons. 2 4 At the report about al-Walid ibn al-Mughira, for example, it names the sira authors who transmitted it and compares Ibn Ishaq's wording with Ibn Hisham's and al-Suhayli's preference; at the mention of the vizier Ibn Muqla in Part Four it gives his biography. 5 6 It also takes up points of language, such as who first said amma ba'd. 4

Date of completion

Its colophon says it was completed in the last ten days of Dhu al-Qa'da 847 AH. 7

Invoking blessings on the Prophet (al-salat 'ala al-nabi)

Praying for the Prophet with blessing, peace and grace, as Ahmed Abdussalam explains it in the programme 'Osalli Alayh': for him the blessing means asking God to multiply His praise of His Prophet before the angels and His mercies on him; peace means keeping him safe in his life and after his death and keeping his religion safe; grace means placing the deeds of the community in the scale of his good deeds. He holds it obligatory on whoever hears the Prophet's name, and among its merits names God's tenfold blessing on the one who invokes it once, relief from worry and forgiveness of sins, and nearness to the Prophet on the Day of Resurrection for those who invoke it most.
