Summary
This is the soundtrack album of Majid Majidi's Iranian film Muhammad: The Messenger of God, co-written with Kambuzia Partovi, about the childhood of the Prophet; it was composed by A. R. Rahman with the Palestinian trio Le Trio Joubran and released by Sony DADC on 23 December 2015. 1 2
How it was made
Rahman's part was confirmed in May 2014; he had earlier made a song for the 2008 Indian release of The Message. The article says it took him six months to understand the score Majidi wanted, and he worked on it for a year and a half. 1 He recorded with Le Trio Joubran in November 2014 and in Paris into February 2015, the orchestra was recorded in Berlin, and the score was recorded across five countries, India, Iran, Germany, France and Egypt, with 200 musicians; Sami Yusuf recorded a track heard only in the film. 1
The music
The score joins a symphony orchestra to instruments and solo voices that give it a sense of place and history: 'Prologue – The Infinite Light' moves from vocals, whispers and chant to a brass-led crescendo; 'Signs of the Last Prophet', 'The Birth' and 'Through the Sands' are choral; 'A Mother's Advice to Her Son' and 'The Sermon' use voices to convey religious feeling; and 'Ababeel', for an action sequence, is built on brass clusters and drums. 1 It has twenty tracks over an hour and nine minutes, closing with 'Ya Muhammad' on a traditional text, sung by Rahman and Sana Moussa with youth and children's choirs from Cairo. 1
Reception
Movie Music UK named it one of the best Asian film scores of 2015. 1
