Overview

Mosque Architecture under Firuzshah Tughlaq is an M.Phil. dissertation submitted in 2011 by Seema Khan to the Centre of Advanced Study, Department of History, Aligarh Muslim University, under the supervision of Dr Gulfishan Khan. 3 It moves from the evolution of the mosque in the central Islamic lands to mosque building under the Delhi Sultanate, then to the techniques, binding materials and decoration of Firuz Shah's mosques, and gives its fourth chapter to the mosques one by one. 1

What it argues

The author brings together Shams Siraj Afif's Tarikh-i Firuz Shahi with the descriptions of Syed Ahmad Khan, Zafar Hasan, Carr Stephen, Percy Brown, R. Nath and Abha Rani, and adds what she found in her own survey of the sites. 4 5 6 She explains the rubble, mortar and plaster of the period by the dispersal of skilled masons after the transfer of the capital to Daulatabad and by reduced finances, and lists its constant features: battered walls, conical corner bastions, tapering turrets at the gateways and small cupolas over square bays. 7 8 She credits the vizier Khan-i Jahan Maqbul Tilangani with the four-court plan of the Kali and Khirki mosques, explains it as protection from sun and rain, and notes that it was not repeated after Firuz Shah. 9 10 11 She closes by comparing Firuz Shah as a builder with the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. 12
