فيض القدير شرح الجامع الصغير

'Abd al-Ra'uf al-Munawi's large commentary on al-Suyuti's al-Jami' al-Saghir, which, as al-Albani describes it, criticises its hadiths and states their grades at length without covering all of them, and treats the original only, not the Ziyada; in it al-Munawi holds that the sigla for sound, good and weak in some copies should not be trusted because copyists so often corrupted them 1 2.

Summary

Fayd al-Qadir Sharh al-Jami' al-Saghir is 'Abd al-Ra'uf al-Munawi's large commentary on al-Suyuti's al-Jami' al-Saghir. 1 Al-Albani describes it as criticising the hadiths of the Jami' and stating their grades at length without covering them all; it treats the original only and not the Ziyada, which makes up nearly half of al-Fath al-Kabir. 1

On the sigla

Al-Albani quotes al-Munawi's commentary that al-Suyuti included many weak hadiths in the Jami', that he ought to have followed each hadith with the word "sound", "good" or "weak", and that the sigla in some copies — a head of sad, ha' or dad — should not be trusted, as copyists so often corrupted them. 2 He also quotes him that al-Suyuti often cites a hadith to its compiler when the compiler had added a remark impugning its chain, and leaves that remark out. 3 Al-Albani points to places where the siglum in the very copy carrying al-Munawi's commentary contradicts what al-Munawi says the author's siglum was. 4

Yusuf al-Nabhani's merger of al-Suyuti's al-Jami' al-Saghir with its supplement Ziyadat al-Jami', arranged alphabetically by the letters of the first word and those after it, marking the Ziyada hadiths with the letter zay and dropping those repeated word for word in the original, with a preface of six points; it is the base text that al-Albani graded and divided into Sahih and Da'if al-Jami' al-Saghir.
