Summary

Anugerah ("A gift from God") is a complete Sundanese rendering of the meanings of the Qur'an by Mariyah Maryati Sastrawijaya; among the hundreds of Qur'an translations made in Indonesia, it is to date the only complete one by an Indonesian woman. 1

The translator

Maryati was born in Ciamis in 1943, lectured in Sundanese language and literature at Padjadjaran University, Bandung, and is known for translating Sundanese literature into Indonesian; she did not study at a pesantren, and her interest in Islamic teaching grew through the mosque near her home. 1

How it was made

She published a partial translation of the first juz', Al-Hikmah, in 2009, completed the whole Qur'an in 2011, renamed it Anugerah, and the Padjadjaran University Alumni Association published it in five red-covered volumes. 1 Her main source was the official Indonesian government translation in the 1990 King Fahd Complex edition, whose column layout hers follows, and she consulted Indonesian commentaries such as Quraish Shihab's Tafsir al-Mishbah. 1

What it contains

The translation is interpretive rather than literal, in everyday rather than classical Sundanese, and keeps strictly to the language's registers of respect; she was moved to write it because some earlier Sundanese translations used too coarse a register for the Prophet ﷺ. She spells Arabic terms as Sundanese speakers pronounce them, and gives no footnotes. 1

Reception

Jajang Rohmana notes that she did not set out to bring a feminist perspective and that she follows the Saudi edition of the official translation closely, with few exegetical choices of her own beyond Sundanese vocabulary; he concludes that a translation by a woman does not necessarily reflect a reading concerned with women's interests. 1
