Summary

Al-Isra' wa'l-Mi'raj is a book by Muhammad Mutawalli al-Sha'rawi, published by Dar al-Jeel (Beirut) in 2003, presenting the event inside the frame of the da'wa: it is, in his words, "a momentous event among the events of the Islamic call — preceded by the sending of the Prophet ﷺ and followed by the Hijra", the three events the call passed through 3 4.

The book's structure

Al-Sha'rawi opens with Sura al-Isra' and its first verse, then builds on the place of Mecca and Quraysh in Arabia and the three stages of the call — the Prophet's own conviction, convincing his nearest kin, and warning the whole sphere — and on the double protection of Abu Talib outside and Khadija at home, preparing thereby for the event at its moment of crisis 5 6 7. In the body of the book he distinguishes the Isra', established by explicit text, from the Mi'raj, established by the implication of obligation; presents the journey's two mounts — the Buraq to Bayt al-Maqdis then the ascent to the lowest heaven; reports what some narrations carry of the Prophet witnessing the punishment of sinners; and closes on the point that prayer was prescribed in the Mi'raj 8 9 10 11.

For young visitors

This is a book the shaykh al-Sha'rawi wrote about the night journey and ascension, explaining how it came between the Prophet's mission and his emigration to Medina.
