Overview
Iftar is entering the time of breaking the fast when it becomes lawful to break it: "when the night advances from here, the day retreats from here, and the sun sets, the faster has broken his fast." 3
Rulings
Its default for one obliged to fast is prohibition; it can be obligatory where an impediment exists — mortal illness, menstruation, lochia, or the forbidden days such as the two Eids; disliked for the traveller per the Malikis and for one who began a voluntary fast without excuse; recommended for an excuse such as honouring a guest; and permissible for the sick who fear worsening. 3 4
Effects
Whoever breaks without excuse an obligatory fast requiring consecutiveness — like expiation fasts — interrupts the sequence and must restart; with excuse he builds on what passed. Make-up is agreed for obligatory fasts and disputed for voluntary ones. 4
