Hims (Emesa)

حمص

A city of Syria on the Orontes; its people compounded with Abu Ubayda ibn al-Jarrah (may God be pleased with him) after Damascus's fall for safety of lives, wealth, wall, churches and mills — a quarter of St John's church excepted for the mosque — at a hundred and seventy thousand dinars; when Heraclius massed for the Yarmuk the Muslims returned to its people the kharaj taken, and they preferred Muslim rule to the injustice they had known, shutting the gates against Heraclius's army as did its Jews; afterwards Hims and Qinnasrin became a single jund; Marwan ibn Muhammad demolished its wall for their defection, and its stone pavement was lifted at al-Mu'tasim's order in the days of al-Fadl ibn Qarin, then the people rebelled, killed and crucified him, and Musa ibn Bugha the Elder took the city by force in year 250.

Overview

Homs is a city in Syria on the Orontes river, one of the districts of Damascus according to the entity data. 1

After the conquest of Damascus, its people made a peace agreement with Abu Ubayda ibn al-Jarrah for safety for their persons, property, city wall, churches and mills. A quarter of the Church of John was excepted for the mosque, in return for one hundred and seventy thousand dinars. 1

When Heraclius gathered his army for Yarmuk, the Muslims returned to its people the tribute they had taken from them. Its people chose to be governed by the Muslims, and they shut its gates against the army of Heraclius; its Jews did the same. 1

Then it and Qinnasrin became one military district. Marwan ibn Muhammad demolished its wall, because they had disagreed with him. Al-Mu'tasim ordered its stone paving removed in the days of al-Fadl ibn Qarin, then its people rebelled, killed him and crucified him. Musa ibn Bugha al-Kabir took it by force in the year 250 AH. 1
