Tripoli, the Maghreb's sea-city nine days from Ifriqiya; Amr ibn al-As (may God be pleased with him) camped before it in year 22, it was fought for and opened by force — where he seized many loads of baziyun cloth, selling them and dividing the price among the Muslims — and Umar ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him) forbade him the march on Ifriqiya, calling it 'not Ifriqiya but a schismatic, treacherous land oft betrayed'.

The conquest

al-Baladhuri reports that Amr ibn al-As came down at it in the year 22 AH, was fought, and then conquered it by force. He took there many loads of brocade, which he sold and divided the price among the Muslims. It is reported that Umar ibn al-Khattab forbade him to march on Ifriqiya. There is an account of it in the conquest of Tripoli. ¹
