Summary
Zam'a ibn al-Aswad ibn al-Muttalib ibn Asad, the Qurashi of the Asad clan, was among the notables of Quraysh; he stood with al-Zuhayr, al-Mut'im and Abu al-Bakhtari in tearing up the boycott document, saying they would not accept what was written in it. 1
In al-Isaba
Ibn Hajar gives him his own entry in al-Isaba, no. 2853, recording that Abu Isma'il al-Azdi listed him in Futuh al-Sham among the commanders Abu Bakr invested with banners: "and he summoned Zam'a ibn al-Aswad ibn Amir of Banu Amir ibn Lu'ayy and invested him, then said: you are with Yazid ibn Abi Sufyan (may God be pleased with him); then he ordered Yazid to put him over his vanguard, saying: he is among the righteous of your people and among…" 2
After the conquests
Abu Ubayda relates that Mu'awiya appointed him over his guard, that he was one of the witnesses of the arbitration at Siffin, that Mu'awiya granted him land at Bab Tuma, that Yazid ibn Mu'awiya put him over his seal, and that he witnessed the pledge to Marwan at al-Jabiya. 2
Source notes and markers of doubt
- The report Ibn Hajar transmits from al-Azdi affiliates him to Banu Amir ibn Lu'ayy, whereas the sira tradition gives him as Zam'a ibn al-Aswad ibn al-Muttalib ibn Asad al-Asadi; the divergence is kept as reported, not resolved.
- Al-Raheeq al-Makhtum at this passage gives neither his full lineage nor his death; to be completed from its sources when he recurs. 1
For young visitors
Zam'a ibn al-Aswad ibn al-Muttalib ibn Asad was one of the men of Quraysh who denounced the injustice against Banu Hashim in the ravine.
