    Summary

Yasser Al-Qurashi (Yasser Abdullah Ibrahim Ahmed Qureshi) is an Egyptian Qur'an reciter, born in 1976 in the village of Deir Ganadleh in Asyut province. He memorised the Qur'an from childhood, earned ijazas in the Hafs reading, in tajwid and in the higher readings, and served as imam and preacher in Cairo and later in the United Arab Emirates. His complete murattal recording of the Qur'an in the Hafs reading — close to thirty hours — circulates worldwide through recitation platforms. 1

    Early life and memorisation

He was born in Deir Ganadleh, a village in the Egyptian province of Assiut (Asyut), in 1976. His father sent him to the village Qur'anic school, where he memorised a large part of the Qur'an under Sheikh Shaker. The village's limited means interrupted his memorisation for a time: he could not go on to Al-Azhar University and completed only his general primary education. He nevertheless continued memorising under Sheikh Khalaf Hassan and Sheikh Kamal Omar Ali, who were disciples of Sheikh Midni. His schoolteachers noticed the purity of his voice and entrusted him with reciting the Qur'an on the school radio, his first experience of public recitation. 1

    Cairo, study and imamate

In 1994 he moved to Cairo to complete his memorisation of the Qur'an and to pursue his college studies. He obtained a bachelor's diploma in social services, and then several Qur'anic certifications: a certification in the Qur'an according to Hafs from Asim, a tajwid certification, and a "high readings" certification. 1

While serving as imam of a mosque in Egypt, he was heard by the owner of a Qur'anic recording company, who liked his voice; the tape he then recorded was his passage to fame in the Islamic world. After receiving a preaching permission from the Ministry of Awqaf, he became imam and preacher at the Musa ibn Nusayr Mosque in Al-Shorouk City in Cairo, before joining one of the mosques in the United Arab Emirates. 1

    Recordings

He has made recordings for several institutions, among them the Hanin Institution, recordings in Mecca, the Al Majd channel of the Holy Qur'an, the Al Iman channel in Gaza, and the Holy Qur'an channel in Nablus, Palestine. His full murattal of the Qur'an in the Hafs reading runs to twenty-nine hours and thirty-eight minutes on the platform that carries his biography. 1
