Tughri Birdi al-Zahiri

Tughri Birdi al-Zahiri, deputy of Syria. Al-Malik al-Zahir Barquq bought him early in his sultanate, freed him, made him a deputy, then a cupbearer, and he rose to head the Hadariyya group. He advanced until he held the deputyship of Damascus several times and the deputyship of Aleppo, and he built a mosque there. He was gentle, wise, and respected by the states of his time, and handsome in appearance. He was appointed deputy of Damascus for a third time in 813 AH. He died as governor there on Thursday, the sixteenth of Muharram, and al-Malik al-Nasir Faraj prayed over him, because he was in Damascus that day and attended his burial at the tomb of Amir Tatam in the Maydan al-Hasa. Al-Nasir was killed some days later in Safar 1.
