Summary
Early life and education
Tamim bin Hamad was born on 3 June 1980 in Doha, Qatar. He is the fourth son of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, and the second son of Sheikha Moza bint Nasser Al-Missned, Hamad's second wife. 1
He was educated at Sherborne School's International College in Dorset and at Harrow School, where he sat his A-Levels in 1997. He then attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, graduating in 1998. 1
Heir apparent
Tamim became crown prince on 5 August 2003, after his elder brother Sheikh Jassim stepped down from the position. Jassim, who had served as crown prince for eight years, wrote to his father that he had not wanted the appointment from the start and that the time was appropriate to step down and prepare for a successor. 1 2
Accession
On 25 June 2013, Tamim's father revealed to close relatives and aides that he planned to step down, and Tamim became Emir of Qatar after his father handed over power in a televised speech. While the previous two Al Thani rulers had come to power in bloodless coups, Tamim was the first to ascend by an abdication, and the transition went smoothly. 1 2
Tamim has total executive and legislative power in Qatar. As head of the House of Thani, he oversees the Qatar Investment Authority, the state's sovereign wealth fund. 1
Reign
The 2022 FIFA World Cup, hosted by Qatar under the preparations begun in his father's reign, and major infrastructure improvements under Qatar National Vision 2030 mark two developmental milestones of his reign. 1
From 2017, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt severed ties with Qatar and imposed a land, sea and air blockade; Tamim led Qatar through the three-year diplomatic crisis until relations were restored in 2021. 1
In 2021 he instituted the first legislative elections for the Shura Council in Qatar, which were later changed after a 2024 constitutional referendum. 1
Under Tamim, Qatar has acted as a frequent diplomatic mediator, maintaining active relationships with distinct geopolitical factions. 1
Perspectives and criticism
This section sets out positions as reported in the sources. It is not a verdict by the museum.
His administration has been under constant scrutiny from human rights organizations regarding the conditions of migrant workers; his government has in response started a number of labour reforms pertaining to the traditional kafala system. 1
