سليمان المستعين بالله الأموي

Sulayman ibn al-Hakam ibn Sulayman ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Nasir, of the Umayyads. He rose against Ibn Abd al-Jabbar al-Mahdi, and was given allegiance by the followers of Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Amir, most of whom were Berbers ².

He was first given the title al-Musta'in billah, then al-Zahir billah. He went to the Christians, made peace with them and sought their help, and they marched with him to Cordoba. He met Ibn Abd al-Jabbar in a famous battle, in which, according to Ibn al-Athir, thirty-five thousand were killed ².

Ibn Abd al-Jabbar was defeated, and Sulayman entered the city and besieged him in the palace until he fled. The people gave him allegiance to the caliphate in Shawwal of the year 400 AH ².

The Berbers and the Byzantines raided Cordoba, plundered it, and took captive and enslaved a great number. Then Ibn Abd al-Jabbar returned, and Sulayman was defeated and went off to Shatiba ².
