Roles are dated and sourced; the museum describes the act and attributes the judgement.

    Early life and education

Samia was born on 27 January 1960 at Makunduchi, Zanzibar. She studied at Mzumbe University, the Open University of Tanzania and the University of Manchester, and worked in development organisations before entering politics. 1 2

    Career in Zanzibar and parliament

She served as a minister in the semi-autonomous Zanzibar government from 2000 to 2010, including as Minister of Tourism, Trade and Investment from 2005 to 2010. She then served as the member of parliament for the Makunduchi constituency from 2010 to 2015 and as Minister of State in the Vice-President's Office for Union Affairs, and in 2014 she was elected vice-chairperson of the Constituent Assembly tasked with drafting the country's new constitution. 1

    Vice-president, then president

Samia became Tanzania's first female vice-president following the 2015 general election, elected on the Chama Cha Mapinduzi ticket with John Magufuli, and the two were re-elected in 2020. 1 On Magufuli's death she ascended to the presidency on 19 March 2021. As president she implemented policies to limit the spread of COVID-19, which her predecessor had denied was a serious issue, and focused on expanding infrastructure and globalising the Tanzanian economy through investors and tourism. 1 Ahead of the October 2025 election the main opposition party, Chadema, was banned from taking part and its leader Tundu Lissu was charged with treason and arrested; scholars, independent observers and media increasingly view her rule as authoritarian, according to the English article, after an early image as a reformer. 1

    Note on the record

Samia Suluhu Hassan is a woman, a native of Zanzibar, as the sources state. 2 On religion, no consulted text states hers and none names a school: Wikidata gives her religion as Islam with no branch, a single structured value; the English article's text makes no religion statement, and the three articles' categories file her under Tanzanian Muslims, Muslim socialists and 21st-century Muslims — filings, which never attest. 2 1 3 4 Her faith is therefore recorded as unknown. The Arabic article's categories also file her under births of 1961, against the 27 January 1960 date in the texts and Wikidata; that filing is not followed. 3

Her predecessor John Magufuli has no record in the museum, so no succession relation is written; the relation written is her birth in Zanzibar. 1
