The Abbasid call
He rose against the Almohads and called for the Abbasid caliph, whom most of the kings of the time obeyed. An Abbasid letter from Baghdad reached him appointing him to govern al-Andalus, with Abbasid robes of honour. Al-Maqqari says that his day resembled the day when the black banners came out of Khurasan. 2
Abu al-Mutarrif, judge of Shatiba, congratulated him in a well-known letter, in which he said that the Abbasid state was proclaimed in the lands of al-Andalus. 2
