Summary

Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Dawud ibn 'Ali ibn Khalaf al-Isbahani, known as al-Zahiri; jurist, adib, poet and wit on his father's madhhab; when his father died he sat in his circle — they thought him too young and sent a man to ask him the penalty for drunkenness, and his answer delighted them; he wrote a book he named al-Zahira, a miscellany collecting every curiosity, rarity and choice verse; and he debated Abu'l-'Abbas Ibn Surayj on the ila' in the majlis of the vizier Ibn al-Jarrah. 1
