Education

Kamal al-Din Ibn al-Manaqib

Kamal al-Din Ibn al-Manaqib al-Khudayri al-Asyuti al-Shafiʿi. He was born at the beginning of the century in Asyut and studied there. He came to Cairo after 820 AH and kept company with the shaykhs of the age until he excelled in jurisprudence, the two roots, the readings, arithmetic, grammar, morphology, rhetoric, eloquence, logic and more. He devoted himself to teaching and legal opinion, and he had a great command of composition. He wrote a fine hand in calligraphy. He wrote a substantial gloss in two volumes on the commentary of Ibn al-Mussanif on the "Alfiyya," a book on the readings, a gloss on al-ʿAdud, a commentary on Ibn al-Muqri's "al-Irshad," and a book on the art of signatures. One of his companions told him that al-Zahir Jaqmaq once intended to appoint him chief judge of Egypt and sent word to the caliph al-Mustakfi bi-Llah, "Tell your companion to come up to me." The caliph sent a messenger to his father to tell him this, but he refused, and he recited a verse about the sweetness of holding high office and then seeing the downfall of ministers.

Among his students were Shaykh Fakhr al-Din al-Maqdisi, the judge of Mecca Burhan al-Din Ibn Zahira, its judge Nur al-Din Ibn Abi al-Yaman, the judge of the Malikis Muhyi al-Din Ibn Taqa and the scholar Muhyi al-Din Ibn Musayfih.

He died on the night of Monday, at the time of the evening call to prayer, on the fifth of Safar 855 AH, and was buried in the cemetery near Shams al-Din al-Isfahani 1.
