Overview
Hisham I ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Dakhil, the second Umayyad emir in Cordoba (Cordoba), who ruled from 172 to 180 AH. He was born in Shawwal 139 AH, and died in 180 AH at the age of forty. 2
Al-Maqqari reports that when he came to power he summoned the astrologer al-Dabbi, who told him that his term would be about eight years. He said: "If this period were in a prostration to God, I would say it was obedience to Him." He renounced worldly things and kept to acts of piety. 3
Among his virtues in al-Maqqari's account is that he completed the building of the great mosque of Cordoba, which his father had begun, and renewed the bridge of Cordoba. It is said that people said he had built it only so that he could ride over it to his hunting, so he swore not to cross it, and he never passed by it again. He sent out collectors to take the alms according to the Book and the Sunna. He is described as a man of goodness and piety, much given to raids and holy war. 2
